Following our atmospheric production of Nosferatu, Corkscrew Theatre continues its exploration of the darker side of Victorian storytelling with Neil Bartlett’s striking adaptation of Jekyll and Hyde.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s familiar tale of respectability, repression and transformation is given a fresh and unexpected theatrical perspective. Bartlett retains the dark heart of the original story, but reshapes it in ways that bring questions of power, identity, desire and social expectation sharply into focus.

At the centre of this adaptation is a fascinating twist: a woman is given a central role and, crucially, agency. In a society where women were expected to know their place, her choices and actions become an important part of the story. This opens up a different way of looking at the familiar conflict between the respectable world and the darker impulses hidden beneath it.
