A Mirror

By Sam Holcroft

The Atrium Theatre, Cambridge, 24 September – 27 September 2025, 19:30

“A mischievous, stark and powerful play”

Following its blockbuster world premiere in London at the Almeida Theatre in 2023, A Mirror transferred to the West End in 2024 to rave reviews and sold-out crowds.

Corkscrew is proud to be the first company to stage this remarkable play.

You are invited to the wedding of Leyla and Joel, but it will soon become clear that all is not what it seems.

Sam Holcroft’s A Mirror is a deeply human exploration of censorship, free speech, and the making and consuming of art under totalitarian regimes.

Reviews for the London production describe the play as: “Thrilling”, “Undeniably genius”, “Bold, inventive and original” and “Intriguing, twisty, metatheatrical… an achievement: like nothing else you’ll see”.

A man with a beard and a pony tail is looking in a mirror. He has a stern expression and is wearing a grey t-shirt.

Audience feedback for A Mirror

  • “Congratulations to team Corkscrew Theatre for a thought provoking, uncomfortable and beautifully played production. It hit a little close to the bone for me right now, but you’ll have to go see it to find out why. Well done, all. Still musing on it this morning.”
  • “Mesmerising – chameleonic.”
  • “Funny, shocking and witty. As the play opens, we are invited to a wedding. As we go to take our seats, we are asked: ‘Are you here for the bride or groom?’ By the end, we wanted to toast all of them.”
  • “That was absolutely brilliant. So clever and a real noodle-scratcher! This kind of dystopian universe is right up our street – but there was more realism in your play than the typical 1984 fare. Our exact words were, “That was what it would really be like!”, and it’s hard to come up with a better review than that. Also special mention to the front of house actors-cum-staff whose breaking the fourth wall was actually quite chilling.”
  • “Impressive performances all round and a fascinating play.”
  • “Such a powerful and disturbing play with strong performances all round. Left me quite unsettled!”
  • “Another triumph. Amazing production so powerful. I introduced my friend to Corkscrew last night and her exact words were “Are they local actors? Honestly this is as good as stuff I’ve seen in London”
  • “The play was a triumph. I loved every minute of it. Definitely up there with Corkscrew’s best work. A very interesting piece of theatre, performed with panache.”
  • “I was gripped from beginning to end, both by the thought-provoking storyline, and by the performers who steadily built the tension to the final scene. The fluid shifts between simple dialogue, action and distracting fourth wall intrusions leave you with an uncertain sense of what is real at any one moment. It’s a tribute to all of you and the young cast that it worked so well. Thank you!”
  • “Went to sleep with it in my head, woke up with it still sitting there… and not just because it’s a fascinating multilayered thinkfest and funny (loved the battle recreations!), but because I can’t imagine anyone delivering this more effectively.”
  • “Anyone in the vague vicinity of Cambridge, do yourselves a massive favour and book a ticket for this immediately – it is absolutely superb. Huge congratulations to Corkscrew Theatre for another belter!”
  • “Superb performances and direction.”
  • “The acting was brilliant. I’m so, so impressed.”
  • “Weapons-grade acting and direction delivering an adult-Doctor-Who-scary-glimpse-of-state-controlled-propaganda-theatre. Wonderfully fluid and taut. Yet another piece of outstanding theatre from Corkscrew. Thank you.”
  • “If you want to see a brilliant play, with some brilliant people in it – then you’d better hope that you’re free tomorrow evening.”
  • “It truly is a play for our times, brilliantly directed and acted.”
  • “My favourite scenes in the play were the searching, pensive duologues and of course that lovely quartet which was funny, engulfing and illuminating.”
  • “The Atrium was looking good (loved the lighting – especially those gobos!), and I hope it’s made more of Cambridge’s theatrical crowd aware of its possibilities; if not, it’s still just so uplifting to see such high quality work taking place there.”
  • “Amazing. Thank you. We’re absolutely buzzing. I honestly thought we, the audience, would be frog marched row by row through the lobby past you, the cast, shackled to each other next to a maniacally laughing minister of culture. I was slightly disappointed that you broke character for the bows.”
  • “Well done everyone. I really enjoyed it; very clever.”
  • “Stellar performances all round and great direction. It was really slick and the young people were a delight. We’re still talking about it over our cocoa.”
  • “Wow. Loved it. Well done everyone involved. Fabulous venue as well.”
